Over two hundred representatives from our Magna Carta Barons’ villages and towns attended a fine lunchtime reception hosted by The Lord Mayor of London at the Mansion House on 12 May. The event took place to mark the 800th anniversary of the entry of the baronial army into London on Sunday 17 May 1215. Alderman Alan Yarrow, The Lord Mayor, welcomed his guests, followed by Sir Peter Soulsby, the Mayor of Leicester, speaking on our behalf. Professor Nicholas Vincent vividly described the events of May 1215, and then we had the rare opportunity of watching excerpts from ‘Left-Handed Liberty’, a play commissioned by the City of London from John Arden for the 750th anniversary in 1965, and performed at the reception by students from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
